•    OUTSIDER KARAOKE – PETER DE KAN

detail of a mental map

The Outsider Karaoke project will be launched in the Wall House on 17 February. Accordingly, the Wall House will be open to the public every weekend from 18 February to 11 March.

Peter de Kan:
‘Eighteen months ago Olof van de Wal of the Wall House asked me to think about a contribution to the ongoing discussion on the creative city. During a stay in the Wall House at the end of 2005 / beginning of 2006 I conceived the Outsider Karaoke project. We all have a city in our heads and this city is different to all of us, because each one of us functions differently, and uses the city in a separate way. This mental city is not restricted to your own city: if you can’t find a particular item, you just take it from another city. In short, the individual mental maps of the city probably do not coincide with the one issued by Falkplan (map producers), which gives us a flat picture of the hardware (streets, houses, parks, etc.). Perhaps the map in your head is three-dimensional instead?
I don’t quite know how it works, but it seemed to me to be worthwhile investigating these mental maps.’

•    THOUGHT PROVOKING, SENSE PROVOKING

The Chinese photographer Danwen Xing (1967) is currently the artist in residence in the Wall House, in the context of Thought provoking, sense provoking. Danwen Xing (http://www.danwen.com/) is one of China’s most prominent photographers. She began photographing when the medium was still in its infancy in China. She devotes her attention primarily to the rapid changes currently taking place in modern metropoles. Her work was displayed at the Noorderlicht Photographic Manifestation in 2005, Traces & Omens.
Danwen Xing is the last of the eight photographers to stay in the Wall House.
The result of this photographic project will be exhibited in the Noorderlicht Gallery and in the Wall House.
The opening will be held on 21 July 2007 in the Noorderlicht Photo Gallery, where Meindert Talma will provide the musical backdrop.

•    JAAP FELLOW BAKEMA

Tim de Boer (http://www.timdeboer.org/) has won the Jaap Fellow Bakema scholarship. It is a scholarship for speculative and exploratory (design) research, at the interface of architecture, technology, and society. The scholarship is awarded by the NAi. In connection with the research, it is possible to stay in the Wall House.
Tim de Boer will stay in the Wall House from 3 to 23 March. He will study terrorism, the city, and architecture. De Boer is interested in the paradoxes that issue from protecting society from terrorism. During his stay in the Wall House, he will give a lecture on his research. The precise time of this lecture is not yet known, but is will be posted on the Wall House website in the near future.
