Chromodomo - Spencer Finch
October 24 - December 6
The Wall House offers a beautiful view out across the Hoornse Meer lake. Right in the middle of the view the church spire in the village of Haren can be seen rising above the trees. The perception of the landscape from the house is one of the key qualities of the location. On his very first visit to the Wall House, Spencer Finch was captivated by the minor colour differences between the sky and its reflection in the water. The study of light, colour, memory and perception forms the basis of Finch’s work.
There is always tension between the objective scientific methods he applies and the subjective experience of personal observation. For the objective examination, he uses colorimeters (light meters for colour and intensity) for example, and for his own perception and subsequent representation he makes use of his memory. The combination of these two fills his work with a melancholy that Spencer Finch personally describes as ‘the impossible yearning to see yourself looking’. Prior to researching the Dutch Grey at the location in question, he will introduce an American Grey in a series of 60 photos.
