Chromodomo - Erwin Wurm

December 12 - January 31

Erwin Wurm owes his initial fame to the so-called ‘one minute sculptures’, a kind of manual by means of which, in combination with quite commonplace objects, people could make sculptures of themselves. The spectator suddenly gains a completely different view of human existence. As a consequence of the new context, new significance is generated. Wurm is also known for his pictures of bloated cars or buildings.
At present he is working on his ‘Mind Bubbles’, a kind of enlarged potatoes that he clothes in knitted waistcoats. Such apparently simple actions generate an instable world, one no longer knows what one should believe. Can one create a good painting by pulling a sweater over canvas on a stretcher?
In the Wall House in particular, the use of the wardrobe of an imaginary resident evokes new significance. The house, a place where people convene, presents an installation which seems to be frozen in time. But one can also easily imagine that it becomes a mad affair when Wurm’s sculptures have a party at night-time after everyone has left.
